January 31 Five Goals for 2007 - January 31, 2007I’m not one to set New Year’s Resolutions, mostly because they last just a week or so before I’ve broken them, but this year I did set aside some goals that I hope to accomplish by the end of the year. I’m sure you’re all dying to read what they are so I’ll get right to it. I know I’m a month late but better late than never, right?
Here is a list of five goals I set for myself at the beginning of the year. Please note that they are not in any order.
Goal No. 1 - How Bout a Raise! I’ve worked 3-plus years for the newspaper and have yet to see an increase in my pay. I’m not ashamed to say it; I get paid crap (like $9 an hour crap!). I’d get paid more money if I delivered the paper or sold the paper, but instead I write for it - part-time - so I get paid crap. Have I mentioned that already? Another problem with the paper is that I’ve worked here for 3-plus years and have yet to get any type of review. So my goal for the New Year was to demand a raise and review. Have I done that yet? Didn’t need to. A week into the year they mentioned a review and a week later I got my review. That usually means you’re headed for a pay increase ($9.05 here I come!) and just today I got an email from my editor that I got a pay increase. Whohoo! 6-percent! More exciting is that I accomplished one of my goals already!
Goal No. 2 - Agent Double-Oh Seven Another work-related goal. It’s been a couple of years (like almost three) since I failed my agent’s test and I think it’s finally time for me to get serious and get my license. Part of the reason I failed three years ago was that I didn’t know if this was the direction I wanted to be headed in. I had just started a new job at a local newspaper, I thought maybe that was were I was headed, but three years later I figure I’ve got a decent thing here at the insurance business and really I don’t feel like trying to find something else at this point in my life. I get to go home for lunch to see Lis and Lukas. I have banker hours and a 5-10 minute commute. And there is that slight chance that I’ll have the opportunity to own the agency someday. So I figured it’s time to step up and accomplish something for once in my life. I have already talked it over with the Boss Lady and I hope to return to the week long classes in March and pass my test by April. Wish me luck!
Goal No. 3 - Buying a Home/Condo/Something! We hate renting! Seriously, who enjoys it? Giving money to someone else and not having anything to show for it after years and years. That’s all it is. So one of my goals was to try and find a way to own our own place, whether it be the condo/townhouse that we currently live in or a small home that Lukas can grow up in, I want something I can call my own. I want to be able to walk into Home Depot and find stuff for my house and I want to not feel bad when Lukas or I ding up the wall. Financially we’re strapped but if we could find a way to get something with a small amount down that’d be great, the problem is the prices of property around here. A 3-bedroom, 2-bath condo is selling for $350,000 down the street from us. One of the condos in our neighborhood is selling for $209,000. It’s outrageous! How are we supposed to buy anything with these prices? How can anyone afford anything with these prices? If we can’t afford anything now we’re just going to have to wait until Lis gets back to work, which is in a few years when Lukas starts school. No Lisy, I don’t have a problem with you staying home and being with Lukas. It saves us money and is better for us all. As long as you continue to do a good job training my son to be a Jedi Knight. Okay, maybe not a Jedi but to be a good little man. So far you’ve done outstanding work.
Goal No. 4 - Keeping My Weight Down Oh, everyone’s favorite New Year’s Resolution. I guess I shouldn’t write "keeping" since my weight isn’t down, but I’m hoping to get it down and keep it there. No, I’m not trying any new or scientific diet. I’m just strictly trying to eat healthier, eat less (no more seconds!), drink more water, not eat after 8pm and try to exercise whenever possible, which is tough, what with working long days and living in a cold and rainy climate.
Lis has started cooking healthier, I’ve tried to keep my portions down and already I’m starting to feel better. Lis has already lost five pounds, which she’s very proud of. Five more and I get to see her naked...just teasing...it’s 10 more. We are starting to go for walks whenever I don’t have to work or it’s not raining and I’ve begun playing basketball again - if that’s what you want to call it. Some of the Goonies (Aaron, Mike, Josh and me) are playing in a church rec league. We’ve lost both of our games by a combined eight points. I played horribly on Sunday scoring two points on a lucky tip-in. I think I missed all of my other six or so shots. But the point of it is to hang out with the guys and get some exercise. I’d like to lose 15 pounds or so. Right now I’m anywhere between 225-230 depending on how many glasses of milk I drank. I’d like to get to about 215 or less, mostly I want to lose my gut and get to where I’m not winded after running up and down the court for three straight minutes.
Goal No. 5 – Church, Church and more Church My fifth goal is to go to church on a regular basis, keep on going to church and get more active with our church. Lis, Lukas and I have been very good with this so far this year. We haven’t missed a service this year and have gone to church for a little more than two months in a row. It makes it easier that Lukas enjoys it. Well enjoys hanging out in the nursery. He’ll walk straight in the nursery and will say "Bye Mama. Bye Daddy," before we even leave the room. The music at church has improved which makes church a little more fun and upbeat and we’re starting to get to know our church family better. Lis has made food for a family at church that has a daughter battling leukemia, I went to Bible study and hope to continue going, and we plan on going to the church campout this summer. It makes me feel good going to church all the time.
There you have it, an insight into the life and goals of Mr. Kevin. I don’t think any of the goals are unreasonable or unreachable. Like I mentioned above, I’ve already gotten one goal out of the way. I’m sure others will pop up along with way, but for now those are the five I’m concentrating on. Of course there are always the goals I have of being a better husband and father. And there’s the goal of trying to raise a good chunk of money for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, which I’ll be posting a blog entry about soon. And the goal of continuing to write in this blog … gotta please my fans too! Hehe! January 29 My Little Buddy - January 29, 3007
It’s hard to explain some of the things he does so bear with me and believe me when I tell you it’s cute. Here are a couple of things going on with Lukas…I guess this is more of an update than me bragging about him.
Chatty Lukas Lukas is now 2-years-old - or 27 months if you’re one of those people that count your kid’s age by months. In case you were wondering Mom I’m now 351 months old - and really starting to get the hang of the talking thing. Sure half of the stuff he babbles we don’t understand and the other half nobody but Lis and I understand, but still he’s trying and when he’s got things down he’s going to be a talker. It’s pretty neat to see, especially since in the last couple of months his vocabulary has increased immensely. Not only does he understand almost everything Lis and I tell him - in both English and Portuguese – but he can now say a mess of words in both languages. It’s kind of funny when he mixes the two languages – Portuglish, as I call it – and tries to explain to his family or friends to do something. It’s good for us all, because I’m picking up the Portuguese language faster as are my parents and friends. Heck, now I don’t even say water, it’s strictly agua (which is water in Portuguese).
The EntertainerHe cracks me up. Not only with his nonsense babble but with the little things he does. At night when we put him to sleep he’ll sometimes talk to me through his stuffed giraffe. Giraffe moves his head back and forth and uses a different tone of voice than Lukas uses. Quite the imagination, and quite entertaining when I’m stuck in a conversation with a stuffed animal. It’s actually kind of funny because I’ve been known to play with a stuffed animal with someone and the person doesn’t realize that they are actually talking to a toy. Like father, like son eh? Oh and he loves to entertain guests, but then again what 2-year-old doesn’t want to do that. Just wanted to try adding a video to my blog, hope it works. Plus, its cute to see him that small again. I kinda miss those days.
One of the Boys He loves to hang out with the boys. The other night Chris, Aaron, Josh and I sat down after our basketball game and watched the Colts-Patriots game. Lukas had to hang out with us. He sat between Chris and I and when he noticed that Josh was doing something different, sitting behind the couch with a chair, he had to do it. So he and Josh sat behind the couch, resting their arms on the back of it. Oh and he loves the game of basketball. He cried the entire hour we played b-ball because he wanted to be on the court with us. He was fine when we were warming up before the game because he got to be on the court while we all shot around, but once we went to the sidelines he wailed. It’s cool that he wants to be a baller, but not so cool that he drove Lis crazy.
Xixi and Coco This potty training thing has been fairly easy, especially since I haven’t done much. Bad Dad, I know. I blame it on work! Hehe! When all else fails blame your work schedule. Anyway, Lis has done a great job potty training Lukas. He tells us when he has to go pee (or Xixi, pronounced ‘she-she’ in Portuguese) and lately has been going poop (or coco, pronounced coco) in his litle potty seat. Which is awesome! Especially since now he tells us about going pee and holds it until we’re able to take him. And when he’s gotta go he races toward the bathroom with me sprinting behind him. Right now he’s just wearing diapers when we are going to be away from the house a long time, like grocery shopping, a ballgame or whatever. It has been a lot easier than I thought, but like I said, I’m not the one around him all the time. Sure he hasn’t gotten the pointing his pee-pee in the right direction down, but he’ll get there. In the meantime we’ll keep wiping off the walls and chasing him down the hall towards the toilet.
The Force and Sports So I may have influenced him early by buying him basketballs, baseballs and every other type of ball there is. And I may have influenced him early by buying Star Wars toys but still he’s his own person and I don’t force the Force or sports on him. Still he loves Star Wars and likes sports. He knows most of the characters and can pick out Han Solo, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, R2D2 and Anakin from a line-up. The other day we were at a store and he grabbed the "Empire Strikes Back" DVD and tried to point out Han Solo to a little girl nearby.
He plays with his little figurines (I’ll post a video soon) and has them act out little things. It’s fun to watch. He likes to watch the movies though we’ve limited it a lot now that he’s in a copying mode and we don’t want him trying to fight people with lightsabers. The Force is definitely strong with him.
About sports…as I mentioned before he likes to play ball and today I got him started on trying to recognize No. 18 from the Indianapolis Colts, Peyton Manning. He said it pretty good, so hopefully he’ll have it down by Super Bowl Sunday. Hehe. Some parents teach their kids the American Presidents or other scholarly things. Me, I teach my kid names of athletes and Star Wars characters. My philosophy, he’ll learn the other stuff in school, right?
I guess that’s it for now. There are many other things I can bore you about but I’ll stop here. I’m just happy to be a dad and happy to have a son that makes me laugh and smile every day. Sure there are days when I get frustrated or upset with him but most of the time we’re making each other laugh. We wrestle, we play games, we laugh, we’re buddies! I guess I’ll find out in the long run if being his friend is a bad thing, but right now it’s too much fun to change anything. January 23 Go Colts! - January 23, 2007I’ve been a sports fan for 20 years now and just two times since has one of my favorite teams played for a championship. Sunday, the two became three when the Indianapolis Colts defeated the New England Patriots 38-34 to advance to Super Bowl XLI. Hopefully, the Colts won’t follow the fate of my other two teams, the 1998 San Diego Padres and the 1992-93 Phoenix Suns. The Padres were swept by the New York Yankees and the Suns fell to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls 4-2. And in between those years there have been some heart-breaking times. For instance, watching the 2001 Seattle Mariners win 116 games only to lose in the ALCS to those same dirty Yankees. Everyone knows it’s not easy being a sports fan but come on! Twenty years and no championships?!?! Do I sound like a Red Sox fan yet (at least they got their title in 2004)? Sure, there were times when I wanted to jump on the bandwagon (please see: 2006 Seattle Seahawks), but I stuck with my teams and continued to watch them fall short of a championship. But now, once again, I get a chance to watch one of my favorite teams play for the chance to win a championship. For the past few years the Colts have been one of my favorite sports teams, and my favorite NFL team. Before you go thinking I’m a bandwagon boy let me explain the reasons I enjoy the Colts. First there is the hillbilly quarterback Peyton Manning. I own a Peyton Manning jersey (thanks Randy) and would have more Colts memorabilia if I was still in high school, sporting my caricature shirts, and decorating my bedroom walls with posters of athletes. Lis won’t allow me so I just have the jersey, which is good enough for me (though I’d like to get a matching hat). Why do I own the Manning jersey? First, he helped me win a fantasy football title a few years ago. Secondly, he’s fun to watch. He’s so good and I love the theatrics and strategy he shows at the line of scrimmage. He moves his hands, taps his helmet, shifts his players around all to throw off the defense. Plus he’s got a great arm that makes the Colts fun to watch. I like the mysterious Marvin Harrison and the catches he makes. I like that "other" receiver Reggie Wayne and tight end Dallas Clark. I also like coach Tony Dungy and his cool Colts sweater vest. He looks sharp! And this year I’ve fallen for rookie running back Joseph Addai. They’re the only sports team (baseball and basketball included) that I want to watch every time they are on TV. The last couple of years they’ve quickly moved up the chart on my list of my favorite sports teams of all-time. Right behind the 1992 San Diego Padres, the aforementioned 92-93 Phoenix Suns (KJ, Barkley, Majerle, and more!) and the 2001 Seattle Mariners. Real quick…I think I’ve mentioned this already but I wanted to congratulate Tony Gwynn (a member of the Padres from 1982-2001) on making the Hall of Fame. Gwynn was Mr. San Diego, playing college basketball and baseball for San Diego State and then playing his entire career for the Padres. He batted a remarkable .338 for his career and had 3,141 hits. He was the best contact hitter of his generation. Congrats Tony! Just had to get that out of my system. It will be tough this year to just sit and watch the Super Bowl. Every year we throw a party and I run a Super Bowl pool. But this year will be different. I’ll want to sit and watch the game and cheer for my favorite team. I’ll get nervous if the Bears are pushing the ball up the field, and I’ll need to be alone if the Colts are making that last minute push towards the end zone. I’m not as bad as I once was, yelling at a kid after turning the channel on the TV when the Padres were in the World Series or throwing a bear back at my ex-girlfriend after she ruined the score of the Suns-Spurs playoff game. I’ve gotten a little more controlled in my old age. Still I’m sure I’ll get excited the morning of Super Bowl Sunday when I pull on my Colts jersey (see below for me sporting my jersey) and get ready for the big game. Go Colts! In other news…my Grandpa died last week. Okay, you might be wondering why I put it in the "other news" section but let me explain. I never met my Grandpa and my Dad hadn’t seen his father in 30-plus years. They didn’t have a relationship and thus the nonchalant "my Grandpa died last week". It is kind of weird, thinking that my actual blood Grandpa passed away. It’s even more weird to think that my Dad’s dad passed away and we aren’t the least bit affected by it. We’re only affected in thinking that it’s odd that we aren’t affected by it. In years past my brothers and I have talked about going to visit him, but that would only be to see where my Dad came from and we’d only go if my Dad had wanted to. He never showed that much interest and can you really blame him? The guy wasn’t a part of my Dad’s life, thus making him never a part of our lives. January 19 What’s New – January 19, 2007Thought I would just leave a quick update on what’s new with us and with my blog. I got a comment by Liz (not my Lis) on Tuesday congratulating me on being featured by MSN on What’s Your Story? Unfortunately, I didn’t notice it until today so I didn’t get a chance to welcome any new visitors and spice up my blog a bit. It’s been kind of frustrating because as most of you know I continue to have problems with my blog. If you have the old version of Internet Explorer then my site boots you out. I’ve tried to fix some things but nothing seems to work. If you have IE 7.0 then the site works fine (so I’ve heard). So I apologize for those of you that can’t access my blog. I’m thinking of starting all over, but I’ve put a lot of hard work into this one site. If anyone can help me fix this problem please let me know. It’d be greatly appreciated. Oh and it seems to be just on my home page. Things that make you go hmmm… Anyway, since I’ve sort of determined it’s not the photos or the Windows Media Player I have added those items back on. I figured I have to show off the cute snow photos we took, plus I wanted to put one of Lukas’ favorite songs on here. It’s Rascal Flatt’s cover of "Life is a Highway" from the "Cars" soundtrack. He calls it McQueen’s Dance (see video on left) for Lightning McQueen. He doesn’t say song he calls it dance…so there’s Uncle’s Dance (for some reason "White and Nerdy" is Uncle Randy’s song), there’s the Bola Dance (song they play at most sporting events), and others like the Star Wars Dance, Curious George Dance and so on. For those that are just visiting then please drop me a line and tell me what you think. If you’re curious as to how Lis is doing, she’s doing great. That’s why I continue to write about the NFL and weather. Things are kind of dull right now, which is actually nice. January 16 Two Down, One to Go – January 16, 2007Two weeks down, one left to go until Super Bowl XLI. The same can be said about the teams I was rooting for when the playoffs began. Two of my teams lost, one remains standing. This past weekend I saw my favorite team the Indianapolis Colts advance to the AFC championship game by defeating the Baltimore Ravens in a field goal-fest. There were no touchdowns scored but Colts’ kicker Adam Vinatieri kicked a record-tying five field goals and Indy won 15-6. Last week I predicted a 13-6 Colts victory, not too shabby eh? The Colts will face the New England Patriots this weekend for the AFC championship. The Patriots defeated one of my other favorite teams the San Diego Chargers. Tom Brady threw 51 times for 280 yards and two TDs. Brady and the Patriots are aiming for their fourth title in six years. Meanwhile my boy Peyton Manning is a win away from his first Super Bowl. Brady has beaten Manning twice on his way to two of his Super Bowl titles. I think Manning strikes back this year, my pick: Colts 27, Patriots 24. My third team, the hometown Seattle Seahawks, dropped a heartbreaker in overtime losing 27-24 to the Bears in Chicago. I had predicted a 21-17 Seahawks win. The Bears will face America’s new team, the New Orleans Saints. New Orleans defeated the Philadelphia Eagles, also by a score of 27-24. My prediction for the Saints-Bears is Saints 17, Bears 13. It’d be a fun Super Bowl if my predictions come true. It’d be a dull Super Bowl if the Bears and Patriots do battle. Both the Patriots and Bears faced each other in 1986 with the Bears winning 46-10. In other news…it continues to snow. I can’t remember the last time it snowed off and on for a week. This weekend it dumped more snow on us, fortunately the temp is rising which means less ice on the road. Still with the snow on the ground, it gives us more photo opportunities with Lukas in the snow! Lis and I "interviewed" another couple for friends. They also have a 2-year-old son, though he’s the size of a 4-year-old, and recently moved here from Canada. They were really nice and we enjoyed their company. Lukas and Hudson got along great. Hudson kept laughing at Lukas’ jokes which made it hard for Lukas to sit and eat his dinner. He’s a ham I tell you, saw a lot of Uncle Randy in his performance Saturday. The two played real well next to each other and enjoy the same things. We really hope they take the position. Okay, so it’s not really an "interview" but it was nice having them over and meeting new people. Lis and Sarah met at Lukas and Hudson’s swimming class. Speaking of swimming class. Lukas and Lis are enjoying it. Not only did they both meet a new friend but Lukas is also learning how to swim. And when you ask him about swim class he tells you about kicking his feet, making bubbles in the water, splashing his hands and singing songs. I guess that’s about it. Nothing much has been going on with us. I continue to have problems with my blog though I’ve noticed that people that have the newest version of Internet Explorer can access my blog with no problems. I don’t know why that is. You should have been asked to download the new version, if not you can do so here. I recommend it, I like the new IE 7.0. And no, Microsoft didn’t pay me to say that, though I wish they did. January 11 Playin’ in the Snow – January 11, 2007The snow that the weathermen predicted finally arrived. Sure it was a day late, but luckily (for me) it happened before I headed to my night job. Unlucky for the hundreds of people stranded on the freeways in the middle of a snowstorm. It took my Dad two hours to get home from a normally 20 minute commute. He wasn’t too happy about that. While he was grunting and groaning and I’m sure mumbling obscenities, Lis, Lukas, Erik and I were playing football in the snow. You can check out the full version of our playtime here. Or click here for Lukas, Erik and my slow-motion highlight reel. I wasn’t able to make it to the paper gig so I invited Erik over for some fun in the snow. We tossed the pigskin around, got snow all over us and threw snowballs at each other. It’s fun being kids again. I know I complained about the snow in my last entry. Mostly because I was at work at the time and was afraid to drive the 20-mile commute home in what I thought was going to be snow. Instead it was just gusts of wind and a dry commute. You see, I love the snow when I don’t have to drive a long distance in it. I get giddy, like a little kid wanting to play outside. It’s fun! I guess that’s all the news I have to report! I don’t have to work tonight either (school closures) so I get to relax and watch our favorite sitcoms tonight. That’s right, NBC’s Must-See Thursday’s are back with Earl, the Office (my personal favorite) and Scrubs (was my personal fave until everyone got knocked up). Speaking of TV shows my brother is currently filming on the set of "Crossing Jordan", another one of mine and Lisy’s favorites. He plays a Boston PD officer. Here is a picture of Sgt. Johnson in uniform. January 09 Driving in the Snow - January 9, 2006Could this be? Two blog entries in one week?!? From Kevin? Never! It’s been forever since he’s last written two in one week, though the sports blog was kinda boring I guess it still counts. Wow, what could be brewing in that tiny brain of his. I’ll tell you what it is…this friggin’ winter weather. Another storm is coming. Gusts of wind up to 60 mph, followed by rain coming from all sorts of directions, freezing temperatures and then snow. Whoohoo! And I get to drive home in it at 11:30pm. By the time I get home (if I make it home) you’ll have to pry my hands off the steering wheel because I’d be holding onto it for dear life. I’m sorry, I’m a wuss (sadly many of you already know that), I hate driving in the snow and rain especially on the highways we have around here. Two-lane roads that are known for their large amount of fatalities. Yah, I’m scared alright! This is the fourth "storm" we’ve had this winter. It all started in the beginning of November with a great deal of rain which caused the rivers to rise….and rise…and rise. The rising rivers caused flood which caused this insurance guy a great deal of stress. Then there was the snow, which was actually nice because I just had to drive two miles in it. But after the snow came roads sheeted in ice. Not fun. Then came the wind. We had one big windstorm then we had another huge windstorm that knocked out power for days, for some people. I had to drive home in the 65-mph windstorm, white-knuckling it the whole time, while our little Tracker seemed to lift off the ground every couple of minutes. And now this…rain, wind, snow and sleet. I think its time for us to become snowbirds and take a couple months off and head to Brazil. Thank you for allowing me to complain and wish my luck (or for no snow) on my drive home this evening. Wild Wild Weekend – January 8, 2007It was a wild weekend for the Wild Cards. The NFL playoffs opened up this past weekend with the Wild Card weekend and boy was it wild. Here is a look at all four games with the wild moment of each game: Miracle at Qwest Field – Seahawks 21, Cowboys 20 Nothing this weekend was wilder than the way the Seattle Seahawks were able to pull out a victory over the Dallas Cowboys. Wild Moment of the Game: There are actually two to choose from but I’ll pick the one that had the bigger impact of the game. Dallas quarterback Tony Romo botching the hold for a 19-yard field goal attempt that would’ve given the Cowboys the lead and pretty much the game. Romo couldn’t get the hold down then sprinted toward the end zone before Jordan Babineaux made a diving save of the Hawks season. Runner-up: Seahawks rookie cornerback Kelly Jennings forced a fumble from Cowboys receiver Terry Glenn at the 2-yard line. Originally called a touchdown after five Seahawks tried to recover the fumble in the end zone, the play was reversed and called a safety because linebacker Lofa Tatupa’s right foot stepped out of bounds. It was a crazy finish to a wild game. I’m a strong believer in thinking wins like these help lead you to championships. Time and time again teams have proven this to be true. Whether it be an odd bounce on a routine groundball out, a fan interfering with a fly ball, or a game-saving tackle by your quarterback you have to have games like these to get you to the next step. The next couple of weeks will tell us if the Seahawks are a team of destiny. Right now I’m beginning to believe. Prediction: Seahawks 21, Bears 17 About that Defense – Colts 23, Chiefs 8 All week long everyone talked about how Larry Johnson and the Chiefs were going to run all over the Colts. Johnson’s final line: 13 carries for 32 yards. His longest run of the night? Six yards. While the Colts defense did a good job of stopping the run, the Chiefs offense did a better job of stopping themselves. Kansas City didn’t get a first down until 3 minutes remained in the third quarter and the Chiefs finished with 7 first downs and 126 yards of total offense. Compare that to Colts running back Joseph Addai and his 148 yards of total offense (122 rushing, 26 receiving) and it’s going to be a long day. Wild Moment of the Game: After Ty Law picked off Peyton Manning and ran it back 43 yards to the Colts 9 yard line, the Chiefs messed up three chances to push the ball into the end zone. Larry Johnson had two rushes getting the ball down to the 2-yard line and then on 3rd-and-2 Trent Green either slipped or his foot was stepped on causing a 4th-and-2. So out came the field goal unit for a 23-yard attempt by Lawrence Tynes. Tynes shanks the ball and it hits the left upright. No good! Colts regain possession and retain the lead at 6-0. The Colts will play the Ravens in Baltimore this weekend. I still believe in the Colts and think if the defense plays like it did Saturday then they’ll contain the Baltimore offense. Colts 13, Ravens 6. One Good Field Goal Kicker – Eagles 23, Giants 20 There was at least one good field goal made this weekend. That game off the foot of Philadelphia Eagles kicker David Akers. Akers hit a clutch 38-yard field goal as time expired advancing the Eagles over the Giants. This came after the Giants had drove 80 yards in seven minutes and overcame a second and 30. The Eagles then went 46 yards in five minutes setting up Akers game winner. I was rooting for the Giants because I had wanted to see Tiki Barber’s career last a bit longer. Instead the Eagles get a match up with my pick for NFC champion the New Orleans Saints. Saints 35, Eagles 21. That Tom Brady Guy – Patriots 37, Jets 16 Tom Brady again proved why he’s the best in the business when it comes to the postseason. Brady threw for 212 yards and two touchdowns as the Patriots turned a 23-16 game into a blowout. The best team in the postseason this century, the Patriots now travel to San Diego to face my pick for Super Bowl champ, the Chargers. My pick: Chargers 30, Patriots 14. Throughout the year Josh and I make our picks using the point spread from the newspaper. We bet a whopping $1 a week and at the end of the year the loser pays up. Thanks to my 3-1 week (darn you Jets for not covering) I’m up 5-4! Whoohoo! Okay, sorry for boring you all with my football talk. Have a great week! January 04 Three Weddings and a Funeral – the Year in Review 2006So we fell a wedding short from duplicating the Mike Newell film but it’s the best way to describe the year that was 2006 for the Johnson’s.It was a busy year for the Johnson’s. Other than attending three weddings and one very depressing funeral, I watched Lukas grow about as much as Lisy’s hair. She entered 2006 with peach fuzz and left it with a mop on her head. Lukas meanwhile grew from being a clumsy walking baby to a quick moving toddler. We took a couple of trips to SoCal, I sucked badly at all three of my fantasy football pay leagues (Lis cringes), and we had another horrible April. Though I don’t usually make New Year’s resolutions there are some things that I will continue to look forward to this year. I’ll continue to watch Lisy’s hair grow (it’s my way of basing how well her health is) and her health to progressively get better. I will watch as my son gets bigger, becomes more of a pain in the butt, learns how to speak more words in Portugu-glish, and love him more and more. I hope to continue to go to church week-after-week (we ended 2006 by attending church five weeks in a row and seven of the last eight weeks of the year, yes I keep stats on everything) and become a bigger part of the church family. And lastly, I hope for the entire family to get through the month of April without any news of cancer (Lis in 2005) or deaths (UJ in 2006). With all that said, here is a mini-highlight reel of 2006 for the Johnson’s (I do hope to finish a photo slideshow to accompany this). First we’ll start with the highlights: Force Does Good We began our year by throwing our annual New Year’s Eve Casino Night and two days later helped my co-worker move her stuff from storage near the ocean to her apartment 3-hours away. It felt good to help someone though the muscle I pulled in my chest didn’t. Our First Vacation Alone In February Lis, Lukas and I took our very first vacation together – alone – by going down to California to visit my brother Randy, my good friend Dennis and his then-pregnant wife Allie and of course, Mickey and Minnie Mouse. We had gotten a $1500 travel voucher from a local radio station (Warm 106.9) for Christmas and found a way to fly us all down to California for a few days. It was the first time we were able to take a break from life since Lis was diagnosed with leukemia in April 2005. We had a great time visiting everyone, taking Lukas to the beach for the first time and going to Disneyland and California Adventure. In March we went to our first wedding, Justin and Lindsey DeWitt. It was a beautiful wedding with a nice cake, free drinks and good food. That’s all that matters right? My Buddy a Dad On April 7 my good buddy Dennis became a proud papa of a baby girl named Ellena. Though it continued to rain (this is Washington State right?) the Johnson’s were able to go to the Mariners Opening Day, which I hope becomes a family tradition, spend many weekend afternoons riding bikes and saw Erik sell a few of his paintings to an old folks home. Team Force Shines We participated in our second consecutive American Cancer Society Relay for Life event and for Team Force it was a complete success. We raised $1500 ($1300 more than our 2005 output), and we finished second in the team spirit competition. This year we will go at it again in hopes to raise even more money for the ACS. My Blog Featured Again In late June I got an email from MSN saying that they wanted to feature my blog. It was the second time it was featured (May 2005 was the first) and it helped my total customers (hehe) reach over 100,000. I’m not at approximately 175,000 visitors, 173,000 of which are family and friends. Find all the featured Spaces, including mine here. I Heart Brazil In July, Lis, Lukas, Josh and I took a 2-week vacation in Brazil. It was my fourth visit to the beautiful country and I still don’t get tired of it. We had a good time hanging out with the family, especially the day we spent with her sisters, nephews, nieces and sorta-brother-in-laws. We went go-karting (ouch!), shopping and ate some meat that I didn’t really want to know what I was eating. I also got to watch my nephew Elton play with his band. Milestone Anniversaries While my parents quietly celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary we not-so-subtly celebrated my Grandparents 50th anniversary. We sent them to dinner at the Space Needle in their very first limousine ride together, and on the following day we had a barbecue and bombarded them with surprises. Their entire family came up from California and one-by-one we released them from my parent’s office in the backyard. My Grandparents didn’t know what hit them. Then my Uncle sur-prised them by driving in the van he gave them and out popped my Grandpa’s brother he hadn’t seen in years. For the last surprise we gave them an Alaskan cruise. It was a wonderful couple of days of celebrating. We saw family members we hadn’t seen in years, we took family photos and of course I presented the family with another tear-jerking slideshow celebrating their life together. All of this made it my favorite highlight of 2006. Wedding No. 2 - A Goonie Gets Hitched Our second wedding of the year was the marriage of the Aaron and Megan Gepner. Aaron is Randy’s best, good friend and their wedding was very nice. Randy did an excellent job on his speech (one of the better ones I have heard at a wedding) and they had plenty of dancing and champagne to keep the Johnson’s happy. A Month of Birthdays Josh turned 30, I inched closer to that mark and Lukas entered the terrible two’s all in the month of October. Lis, Lukas and I surprised Josh (with help from his Mom - thanks!) by throwing a birthday party for him and taking him to a Silvertips game. Two days later we had a barbecue for Lukas and my parent’s spoiled him with toys galore! We also took Lukas to the pumpkin patch which was a lot of fun for the three of us. Chemo-free for a Year In November we celebrated a year of remission for Lis. Okay, so maybe we didn’t throw her a huge party (like we should have done) but it had been a year since her last treatment and hadn’t had any sort of setback in her recovery from leukemia so we were all happy. Wedding No. 3 - A Johnson Family Vacation Our third wedding was one of my favorite weddings I’ve ever attended - the wedding of Chris and Andee Lake. It was an adult’s only occasion which we were disappointed about at first, but later realized it actually made the celebrating more fun. We were all able to drink, dance and not worry about Lukas getting tired. Another thing that made it enjoyable was that it was in Califor-nia, so we were able to make a mini-vacation out of it. We spent a day in Hollywood with Randy, visited with my friend Dennis, his wife Allie and their new baby Ellena, and got a nice surprise from my Uncle Steve, who drove over from Arizona and surprised my Mom big time. We also spent time with my cousin who babysat Lukas while we were at the wedding. Thanks Stephanie! Randy’s Small Screen Debut Though he didn’t have any speaking parts Randy did make his television debut in November on the CBS show "Jericho". Randy played a deputy and did a mighty fine job of looking tough hold-ing a shotgun in the background of numerous scenes. It was fun watching it with him and excit-ing seeing him on the small screen. Three Days of Christmas Though I wanted to dedicate an entire blog entry to the Christmas weekend we recently had I’m going to resort to this mini-summary of the time we had. For the third time the Johnson’s loaded up in the motor home and drove to Seattle to spend a day walking around the city, having lunch and getting ourselves in the Christmas spirit. We all wore our Santa hats which people always comment on (the ladies at Starbucks thought we were cool!) and/or look oddly at. That evening we went to Erik’s friend’s house for a Christmas party, the following day we had our second annual Christmas Eve Pajama Pizza Party and on Christmas we opened gifts, did our Secret Santa game and had a nice dinner. The fun part of the day came in watching Lukas open his gifts. It had been two months since his birthday but he had quickly gotten the hang of it. He ripped through the wrapping paper staring intently at the toys and throwing aside the sweatpants and t-shirts. And my parents didn’t go overboard with their gift buying. And now the lowlights: A Little Scare In late January we got our first (and only) scare of the year with Lis’ cancer. Her white blood cells and platelets were both low and she had a high amount of lymphocyte cells which is usually a good indication that the cancer could be returning. Everything was alright and there was no sign of cancer, but for a couple days in January things were tense around the house. Super Screwed In February the Seahawks were screwed by some very (extremely) questionable calls by the referees at the Super Bowl in Detroit. Final score: Steelers 21, Seahawks 10. Brazil Chokes at World Cup The stage was set. All Brazil needed to do was win their first two games in the World Cup tour-nament and I’d be able to experience the true feeling of watching a Brazilian World Cup soccer game in Brazil, I would also get to write an article for the paper I work with about the local scene in Brazil. Too bad for me and too bad for Brazil as France ousted them in the quarterfinals of Stage 2. Garage TKOs Elisete There was a lowlight hidden in our highlight trip to Brazil. My in-laws tank-size garage door broke landing partly on their car and partly on my sister-in-law. In fact, if the car wasn’t there she probably wouldn’t be here either. The garage split open her forehead and her cheek and gave her a nice shiner on the first day of her vacation. Layover in Chicago No trip to Brazil is complete without some sort of mishap. For the second time in a row (Delta lost our baggage in Dec 2004 and we didn’t get it until a week later) we had a problem while travel-ing to Brazil. This time we got a free night in Chicago, courtesy of United Airlines. Though they hooked us up with a room and a $5 voucher for food we still had to fly during the day which took up a day of vacation. The biggest lowlight of the year, and the thing that 2006 will forever be remembered by, was the death of our Uncle Jeff. UJ passed away on April 24 after having a heart attack while waiting in line to cross the border into Canada. I received a call sometime in the afternoon that there had been an accident and a couple hours later the news was confirmed when Erik, Lis, Lukas and I met up with my family at UJ’s house. The news came has a complete shock as UJ was just 45-years-old. He was our closest relative (not including my Grandparents) and had lived with us throughout our lives, having lived with us in California, Hawaii and here in Washington. It was the first death my brothers and I had to deal with up close and personal. I almost fainted at the viewing, we all gave a eulogy, the three of us were all pallbearers (along with Uncle Steve, Cousin Butch and Grandpa), and I helped write the Order of Service. We all, along with Uncle Steve, also created a very nice slideshow looking back at UJ’s life. The death of UJ has been very hard on the family. If you’ve read my blog you know that we’re a tight-knit family and that comes from my Mom’s side of the family. My Mom and her two brothers are very close and losing their baby bro has been very tough on them and extremely tough on my Grandparents. We’ve visited him quite a bit this past year. We went to an emotional service on Memorial’s Day, visited on his birthday and before the Grandparent’s 50th Anniversary and we more recently we went the day before Christmas Eve. He will forever be missed and in our hearts. We miss you UJ and thanks for continuing to look out for us! Finishing off a Year to Forget Only to make their year worse, my Grandparents dog, Crisco passed away in mid-December, he was 14, and their car was stolen while my Grandpa visited the VA hospital in Seattle. Things can only get better in 2007 - we hope. |
