    Off the Market – September 26, 2007

Erik is officially off the market. That’s right, you read it girls. Your chance has ended. My brother is officially off the open market and headed for marriage.

Erik made his announcement a day after proposing to his girlfriend of five weeks. That’s right five weeks. They’ve set a tentative date for February 23. I’m still in shock.

I’m happy for him. I really am. I know he wanted to settle down and I hope that he found the right person to do that with.

I’m just a little concerned. Five weeks is not a long time to get to know someone. And I’m not a big advocate on getting engaged a month and a week after you met someone. There’s just too much to learn about each other.

I know if you’re in the relationship you think you already know everything there is to know about the other person, truth is you don’t. I still am learning things about Lis that I didn’t know when we got hitched a little over four years ago.

    Terrible Two’s, more like the Trying Three’s – September 24, 2007

I don’t know who came up with the so-called Terrible Two’s, but I’m guessing it was from someone with a daughter (after all, aren’t girls the ones that supposedly learn faster than boys?) or someone eons ago that couldn’t remember the date of birth of their child.

Either way, Lis and I have determined that there is no such thing as the Terrible Two’s, its all about the Trying Three’s. Unless Lukas’ attitude stops in the next two weeks – before he turns three – its clearly obvious that the upcoming third season of Lukas looks to be especially tiring and trying on our minds and body.

Lukas continues to grow both in his own body and mind. His vocabulary grows every day, often saying words that I didn’t know he knew or should say. And he’s very independent. Which is sometimes scary, sometimes fun to see, and often the reason for his new found attitude.

Everyone always mentions the Terrible Two’s, so about this time last year we were a little weary entering his second season expecting a tough and challenging time. He’d cry and we’d think it was the Terrible Two’s. But for the most part Year No. 2 wasn’t hard or challenging. That’s until the last couple of months.

Now he screams and throws a fit when we want to put on his sweater, jacket or football jersey. We ask him to go and wash his hands before dinner and it’s, “No thank you” or just the plain ol’ “No!” When we tell him to go pee he stands there and tells us, “It don’t work Mama, it don’t work.” It’s hard to get him to take a bath, sit down and eat, get dressed or brush his teeth at night. All this was easy a year ago. No problem whatsoever.

One note: He seems to do just fine falling asleep at night. We no longer need to cage the door hoping he won’t get out. This problem was really bad last year when Lukas would scream and cry and try to escape the gate that was outside his door.

And it’s not just Lis and I that feel this way. Lukas’ buddy Hudson just turned 3-years old and in the months leading up to his third birthday he was driving his folk’s nuts by storing food in his cheeks and not eating dinner. My co-worker of mine says his soon-to-be 3-year-old is being a “dickhead”. See, we’re not alone.

So, what now? Do we have a year of him telling us “Never!” and fussing every time we want him to use the bathroom, get in the car or eat? Do we wait it out and hope that he ends in a few months? Either way, it looks like we’re in for a frustrating, trying, yet sometimes entertaining year. It’s a good thing I work two jobs…hehe.

Preschool, Dog Show and a horrible Fantasy weekend - September 18, 2007

I always enjoy when people have left comments on my blog postings. I especially enjoy when they ask questions, which gives me something to write about!

I’ve added a new and revised “Guestbook” to my site. Feel free to drop in there and ask me questions about anything. I’d be happy to share a story, tell you how I feel about something, or just randomly ask questions. Doesn’t that sound exciting? You bet it does!

Leslie from “Leslie’s Home Spot” recently left a comment and asked me about Lukas going to preschool.

We did not enroll Lukas in preschool this year, opting to wait a year before putting him in school. He will be going to the 2-3 year old classes at our church during Sunday school, beginning this Sunday.

Since Lukas turns three in October, we didn’t think it was necessary that we put him into preschool right away. If he begins school this year, won’t he have to go back and do preschool again next year?

Lis will instead do a little “home-school, preschool” herself. She did some research on the ol’ reliable internet (always good for information) and found some books and information on how to do preschool from home. Isn’t preschool basically colors, shapes, numbers, finger-painting and sandbox? Plus, it’s kinda expensive to do preschool, isn’t it?

We’ll see how he does at Sunday school and go from there.

    Let’s see what else…

Saturday we took a two-hour trip to Wenatchee to visit my parent’s at their dog show. It’s mine and Lis’ favorite dog show because it a) takes place outside, b) the weather is always nice and c) feels like a weekend getaway because of the mini-road trip we take. Koby took Best of Breed in the Flat-Coated Retriever section then lost in the Sporting Group.

We hung out at the motor home with the folks, had some lunch, drank some watermelon martinis that Dad made, and watched Lukas enjoy his time well spent with his grandparents. There was a scary moment when Lukas was playing inside the motor home, standing on the stairs and pretending to serve me food.

He pushed the door and it opened, causing the lil’ man to fall off the stairs, land head first on the pullout stairs and do a flip onto his back and onto the hard ground. I didn’t see what happened and went to pick him up, but my Dad told me not to pick him up just to see if he was okay. Dad picked him up and we made sure everything was working fine. Sure enough, after a minute of crying he was back at ‘em. I guess he landed on his head, doing a headstand, and then flipped over. It caused a nice little bruise on the bridge of his nose but it could’ve been more serious.

The second scary moment came in the bathroom of the restaurant we were eating at (Note: never eat a “taco wrap” it’s essentially a burrito, but not as tightly wrapped). I took Lukas into the bathroom to go pee. As I unzipped, he went and attempted to put both hands on the pee-stained bottom of the men’s urinal. With my Dad-like reflexes I turned to him (with Mr. Winky out in the open), grabbing his hands telling him, “No, no, no.” He was startled and cried but I had saved his hands from gobs of germs, and nightmares for me.

Sunday we went to church and I came home to watch my TiVo’d version of the Colts-Titans game. Now that I’m older I’ve found that I don’t have a team I desperately root for. What I mean by “desperately root for” is that there isn’t a team that gets me all excited when I watch them, causing me to jump off of the couch and scream at the TV. Not until Peyton Manning and the Colts came along. Now I do that, and its fun!

It’s not fun, however, losing in all four of your fantasy football leagues and both of your fantasy baseball leagues. It was a horrible Sunday for me. Lis just laughed at my frustration; I didn’t think it was funny though. I don’t like to lose, and to lose six times in one day sucked big time.

Are You Ready for Some Football?!? - September 4, 2007

The pre-funk to the fantasy football season is finally over. And boy did I get down! Never have I studied so much for an upcoming football season, and never have I been so lucky to get the draft picks I got this season. I’m feeling extremely confident in my teams, partly because of the luck I got and partly because I felt I drafted smart. Yes, there is some skill involved in fantasy football. First there is the draft, where strategy is 95-percent of it, luck of a good draft slot being the 5-percent.

I got extremely lucky this year. In fact, I’d like to see if anyone else had as much luck with their draft slots as I did. I play in three leagues, two for money, one for fun.

In my keeper league – keeper meaning that you get to keep your sixth and ninth round picks for three years, if they remain on your roster – I got the No. 1 pick. With the No. 1 pick I snagged record-breaking running back LaDainian Tomlinson. I’d have been laughed at if I chose someone else. My keeper was Frank Gore. Gore is picked by many analysts to be the No. 4 or 5 back in the league. So a minute into the draft I’m quickly appointed the early favorite with two of the top five players on my roster. Oh yah, I was pumped and unable to hide my smile. Lukas joined me for the draft, guess he was a bit of a good luck charm for dear ol’ Dad. I also feel comfortable with the keepers I drafted: Ladell Betts and Patrick Crayton.

Kevin hopes the dynamic duo of L.T. (left) and Gore (right) lead him to a fantasy championship and $275.

My second league is the Herald league, which is comprised of mostly guys and a girl from my newspaper job. My good buddy Dennis is allowed into the league because he’s played with us in fantasy baseball and basketball and does quite well. He won the baseball league and finished second in basketball. In this league I snagged the No. 4 pick which allowed me to pick my man-crush, Peyton Manning. Like the keeper league there is a lot of strategy involved as this crazy league plays two quarterbacks, tight ends, kickers and defensive players. I thought I drafted extremely well and will enter the season as one of the highest ranked teams.

Kevin drafted his very own man-crush, Peyton Manning, No. 4 in his Herald league.

Finally, in my third league, the non-pay league that I play in with friends, my ex-boss and her family. In this league I grabbed the No. 3 pick. I moved Manning down to No. 4 on my list so that I could draft Joseph Addai, the Colts running back who had a great season as a rookie last year.

Kevin thinks Colts' running back, Joseph Addai is in for a monster season.

Yah, there is a chance I could win all three. Of course nobody has played a game yet and injuries have yet to occur, so anything can happen. Let’s just say that for the first time in years I’m feeling pretty darn good about the upcoming football season.

    In other news…had a wonderful 3-day weekend.

Saturday was my final fantasy football draft. I met up with Aaron and Chris and we went to the house that we hold our draft at. This will be the seventh year I’ve played in this league with the same guys and gals. I see them but once a year, but it’s fun. We sit around the living room making our picks, talking football and laughing at certain picks people make or the occasional "Is (insert players name) taken?" This year I decided to take Lukas. Figured it was pre-training for what is to come. Give him about five more years before he’s totally involved with fantasy football, so get an early start at what the live draft is all about. Actually I took him because Lis was giving me crap about how I was going to be gone for a few hours and how Lukas was upset at me because I always leave (though the million other times I’m gone is for work, not play). So I said, "Fine I’ll take him with me!" hoping and praying that he’d be okay hanging out with a bunch of fantasy nerds in a living room.

I walked in with my man-crush’s jersey on; Lukas was sporting the No. 85 of San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates, who I’d draft in the third round a little bit later.

I was nervous, but he once again proved me wrong and in turn made me look like a good dad. We showed up to the draft and I introduced him to the guys. Then we sat down and as I made my stupid comments and wisecracks about the draft he was busy taking notes on his notepad (okay, so it was scribbling but can’t a guy hope?). He didn’t complain the entire time, and actually ended up having a great time. He played with his toys and watched a turtle in a tank. He went outside with the dogs and played with the squirt gun that outweighed him. He checked out the pond in the backyard, had me take of his shirt when he wanted me to squirt him with water and he ate his snacks and did what I had hoped he would do when I brought him there.

I think people that know how kids are were generally surprised with how well he acted. I sure was. Okay, maybe not surprised, just extremely proud. Later he would chat it up with Mom telling him about Steve’s house (it was actually Chris’) and playing with a turtle and being with the football guys.

Sunday we went to an AquaSox game with our friends. Again, I had another great time. It was three married couples (Us, Bashfords and Schaubles), Erik and his new girlfriend, Sarah’s sister who was visiting from Canada and Josh. The guys hung out and watched as the three boys ran wild a couple rows down, the gals talked it up and Erik and his new girlfriend made out and snuggled. I had a good time just chillin’ at the ballgame with everyone. It was a day game, which makes things better when you have young-ins. Lukas and Hudson were able to run around the bases, though Hudson doesn’t quite have his home run trot down and instead went in circles around the shortstop area.

Monday, Lis, Lukas and I spent a day together. An entire day together! I honestly can’t remember the last time the three of us did that – and it was a blast! We took all the back ways to a park in Everett. We had a picnic then Lukas played in the water (and loved it!), then in the playground. After a couple hours we all went and got some 39-cent ice cream cones from Mickey D’s taking the extra long way back home. That evening the three of us had our very own barbecue on our patio. I cooked up some burgers, Lis did the rest and we sat and ate while watching photos from our day at the park.

That reminds me! I bought a new memory card for our camera and it holds like 3,000 photos! I’m so pumped to use it all up some day!
